CMU Probabilistic Graphical Models 10-708 Spring 2019 materials.
This page is intended as a resource for those wishing to self-study the graduate-level course “Probabilistic Graphical Models”, taught by Eric Xing to MS/MSc and PhD students in machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University in the spring of 2019. It contains all publicly available course materials from the official course page, work I completed as part of my own self-study; as well as my own comments and materials for those who wish to similarly benefit. The Hodges-Le Cam estimator.
In this post, I examine the construction known as the Hodges-Le Cam estimator. In particular, I examine how scrutiny of its large-sample limiting behaviour invites caution on the use of asymptotic arguments, and also the broader significance it had on the research programme in efficient, optimal estimators in theoretical statistics in the 1950s and 1960s.Self-study: CMU Intermediate Statistics 36-705 Fall 2016 materials.
This page is intended as a resource for those wishing to self-study the graduate-level course "Intermediate Statistics", taught by Larry Wasserman to MSc and PhD students in machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University in the fall of 2016. It contains all publicly available course materials from the official course page, work I completed as part of my own self-study; as well as my own comments and materials for those who wish to similarly benefit.Pointwise and uniform convergence in statistics and machine learning.
In this note, I want to clarify how and why the somewhat subtle distinction between pointwise and uniform convergence in probability is important for understanding the generalisation ability of a machine learning algorithm.
